Work for Queensland - We Need You Here campaign to help Queenslanders grab a piece of the resources boom
Premier Anna Bligh is urging Queenslanders to find out about the jobs available in the resources boom and to plug into the training they need to get them.
A series of new advertisements, starting today, will urge Queenslanders to find out more information about the opportunities available to them and point them to courses and skills training to help them get jobs in the industry.
"The Work for Queensland - we need you here ads are specifically design to help Queenslanders grab a piece of the boom in the mining and gas industries," said the Premier.
Ms Bligh said the ads, direct people to the government's www.opportunities.qld.gov.au website where they can:
- register for the new Resources 101 course to get ready to apply for jobs onsite
- get information on upcoming Work for Queensland jobs expos
- search specifically tailored jobs websites for resource sector jobs
- find out about other opportunities the Queensland Government is funding.
"Queensland's economy is on the verge of the next big leap forward. Our resources are more sought after than ever before," she said.
"We have the right stuff, in the right place, at the right time and our State is ready to seize this moment.
"I want to see as many Queenslanders plugging into this boom. I want every Queenslander to have the chance to gain from this boom and that is what these ads are designed to help them do."
The Premier said as many as 38,000 construction and operation jobs will be created in the resource industry between now and 2015.
"Recently we announced the Resources 101 course and special Work for Queensland expos to will help job seekers in high unemployment areas plug into the mining boom," she said.
"We estimate there are up to 3,500 vacancies right now in the resource industry and we intend to make sure that as many Queenslanders as possible can take them up."
The Work for Queensland initiative aims to link job-seekers in areas of high unemployment - Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay-Burnett, Far North Queensland and the Whitsundays region - with job opportunities in the resources sector.
Specifically targeted at the unemployed or underemployed in areas of high unemployment and skilled or low skilled workers looking for a career change, the initiative promotes short and long term job opportunities and increases awareness of the benefits of the mining boom for Queensland.
Total expenditure for the Work for Queensland - we need you here campaign is approximately $2.7 million, to be funded equally by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Department of Education and Training and the
Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.
"It will include television commercials, radio, online and print advertising particularly in the regions where the Expos are taking place," said the Premier.
"Queensland has a bright future and every Queenslander has a right to be part of it.
"I'm determined to make the boom work for all Queenslanders to give us more skills, better jobs and more opportunities."
